The hard part
The permit strictly bars any work for Bulgarian clients or employers, so mixing local and foreign income can void it.

  • The years count, but this permit ends after 2 years, before permanent residence at 5; the family would need to move to another permit to keep going.
  • The remote-work permit stops after 2 years, short of the 5 for permanent residence; the time helps only if the family moves on to another long-term permit.
  • The Bulgarian language level is not published on the pages we read; law firms report a basic level, some say A1.
  • Guides say permanent residence allows up to 30 months abroad in the 5 years and counts study at half; not confirmed on an official page.
  • The general rule is that you must be released from your old citizenship; spouses of Bulgarians and some EU citizens are reported to be exempt. Not confirmed on an official page.
  • No civics test appears in the official summary; no processing time was found.
  • BG-REMOTE: one year, renewable once, per the earlier research (2026-09-24), not re-read today.
