1

Does it fit your family?

One question, from the program’s own rules.

Savings you could move or invest?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Investment
About $200,000.
Time
2–4 months for purchase and due diligence, then weeks to months for authorisation.
Cost
The investment (about $130,000–200,000+), plus transfer tax and registration of 3–5%, plus legal and translation fees.
The hard part
Documenting the funds as foreign direct investment through Central Bank channels and holding the property throughout.

Dollar figures are converted from the local currency at the rate the program’s research used; the official figure is in the local currency.

Citizens by 2036.

If your first permit is issued in 2027 and you keep living there, this is the road.

  1. 2027
    First residence permit

    4 years, not renewable.

  2. 2031
    Permanent residence

Most temporary residence permits last 2 years and are then changed to residence for an indefinite period if the original basis still holds (retirees, for example). Real-estate investors wait 4 years. Digital-nomad permits cannot be changed to indefinite residence.

  3. 2035
    Apply for citizenship

    With a language test.

  4. 2036
    Citizenship
Language
Able to communicate in Portuguese, shown by the Celpe-Bras certificate or another document accepted under Portaria 623/2020.
Time away
The years are counted from registration of indefinite residence with the Federal Police, not from the first temporary permit. Trips abroad may add up to 1 year over the 4-year period (6 months over 2 years, 3 months over 1 year), and you need at least one document a year proving you lived in Brazil.
Two passports
Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.
  • Four years (keeping the property) before indefinite residence; the 4-year naturalisation clock starts only then, so about 8 years in all.
  • Dual citizenship: Brazil asks naturalising foreigners for no renunciation, but the Foreign Ministry's dual-nationality page was behind a captcha; marked true on that basis.
  • Whether 'Portuguese-speaking countries' includes Equatorial Guinea is not stated; it is left off the list.
  • No official decision-time figure found.
  • The 2-year default for permanence is the retiree rule (RN 40/2019); other temporary permits have their own lengths.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
