Stable monthly retirement or pension income of at least $2,000, from social security, a pension, disability, or survivor benefit; dividends, rent, or investment withdrawals do not qualify as the primary source.

What it takes.

Income: At least $2,000 a month, steady and documented.
Time: 3–6 weeks at the consulate; Federal Police registration within 90 days of entry adds several more.
Cost: About R$168 authorisation plus R$205 registration (roughly $70–75), plus $500–1,500 for legal help, translation, and apostilles.
The hard part: The income must be genuinely pension-sourced and provably transferable every month.

Most temporary residence permits last 2 years and are then changed to residence for an indefinite period if the original basis still holds (retirees, for example). Real-estate investors wait 4 years. Digital-nomad permits cannot be changed to indefinite residence.

Language: Able to communicate in Portuguese, shown by the Celpe-Bras certificate or another document accepted under Portaria 623/2020.
Time away: The years are counted from registration of indefinite residence with the Federal Police, not from the first temporary permit. Trips abroad may add up to 1 year over the 4-year period (6 months over 2 years, 3 months over 1 year), and you need at least one document a year proving you lived in Brazil.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

After 2 years the permit is changed to indefinite residence rather than renewed; only years after that count toward the 4-year naturalisation clock, so about 6 years in all.
Dual citizenship: Brazil asks naturalising foreigners for no renunciation, but the Foreign Ministry's dual-nationality page was behind a captcha; marked true on that basis.
Whether 'Portuguese-speaking countries' includes Equatorial Guinea is not stated; it is left off the list.
