Residence permit without gainful activity for retirees (55+). Switzerland will admit a retiree, 55 or older, with strong personal ties (family, prior stays, community links) and enough wealth, but cantons weigh the whole picture, not money alone.

Residence permit without gainful activity for retirees (55+)

A cantonal residence permit (B permit) without the right to work.

Who qualifies

  • The applicant must be at least 55 years old and not pursue gainful employment in Switzerland or abroad (passive management of one's own assets is exempt).
SEM: Residing in Switzerland without gainful activity
  • Sufficient financial means for the applicant and any dependants, so that public assistance is never needed; the 2026 federal minimum living-needs benchmark for a single person is CHF 20,670 a year before housing and health insurance, but cantons expect assets and income well above that floor in practice.
SEM: Residing in Switzerland without gainful activity
  • Special personal ties to Switzerland: evidence can include prior long stays, earlier permits, close relatives already resident, language ability, or other direct connections; the canton decides case by case.

1

Does it fit your family?

3 questions, from the program’s own rules.

How old are you?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Age
55 or older.
Time
3–6 months, and highly dependent on the canton's assessment of personal ties, which can extend the process.
Cost
About $500–1,500 in permit and document fees; no fixed capital figure, but cantons expect visible, comfortable wealth.
The hard part
The personal-ties test: wealth alone does not satisfy a canton if the applicant has no prior connection to Switzerland, so this is much harder to plan for than a pure income or capital threshold.

Language
A national language at B1 spoken and A2 written (a fide or recognised certificate); some cantons ask more.
Civics
No federal test: cantons and communes check that you know Swiss, cantonal and local life, often with a written test or interview, and the rules differ by canton.
Time away
10 years living in Switzerland on a B or C permit, 3 of them in the 5 years before applying, plus 2–5 years in the canton and commune. You must hold a C permit when you apply.
Two passports
Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.
  • The C-permit list of nationalities comes from the Zurich migration office's directive of 24 March 2025; other cantons apply the same federal treaties but may use their discretion differently.
  • Switzerland publishes no overall decision time; federal, cantonal and communal steps together often take one to three years, but no official source gives a range.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.

Living there.

Time you must spend there
Must make Switzerland the actual home; cantons expect genuine, substantial physical presence, not a nominal address.
Tax
Ordinary Swiss tax residence applies (worldwide income and wealth taxable) unless the applicant separately negotiates lump-sum taxation (see CH-LUMP-SUM), which is open to the same retirees if they qualify.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
