A residence permit for self-employment, issued for up to 3 years initially, renewable while the activity continues.

Who qualifies

For freelancers (Freiberufler, §21(5) AufenthG): proof of the professional qualification for the activity, signed client contracts or letters of intent, and sufficient means to live on, typically shown as roughly €9,000–€12,000 a year at minimum in practice.

What it takes.

Income: At least $825 a month, steady and documented.
Time: 4–12 weeks for the visa itself; nationals of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Israel can instead enter visa-free and apply for the permit from inside Germany.
Cost: About $500–1,500 in fees and translations, plus roughly €300–€600 a month for private health insurance.
The hard part: Convincing the Ausländerbehörde the activity has an 'economic interest' or 'regional need' (commercial route) or genuine client demand (freelance route); requirements vary noticeably by city.

Civics: The naturalisation test (Einbürgerungstest): 33 questions on democracy, history and society, 3 of them about your state; 17 right to pass, €25.
Time away: Five years of lawful, habitual residence. Trips abroad of up to 6 months do not break it; a residence permit lapses if you stay away longer than 6 months without permission. You cannot apply while holding a study permit.
Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

Settlement after 3 years if the business has succeeded and supports the family, instead of the usual 5.
The 3-year fast track for exceptionally well-integrated people was abolished by the Bundestag on 8 October 2025 (in force 30 October 2025); the BAMF page still mentions it, but the law now says 5 years.
Germany publishes no national decision time for naturalisation; it varies widely by city.

Tax: Living in Germany on this permit makes you a German tax resident once present more than 183 days or with a permanent home there; worldwide income becomes taxable, with no special low-tax regime for this permit. Note: there is no German digital-nomad visa; a remote employee of a foreign company generally cannot use this permit, which is for self-employment, not foreign employment.
