What it takes.

Time
3–4 years for a bachelor’s or 1–2 for a master’s, a few weeks for the job-seeker permit, then up to 18 months to find work.
Cost
Public tuition is free or a semester fee of €150–350 in most states (Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 a semester to non-EU students; private and some English-taught master’s run $10,000–20,000 a year), plus about $13,100 a year in the blocked account and a few hundred dollars in permit fees.
The hard part
The 18 months are a hard, non-renewable clock, and most graduate jobs still want German. No age limit, but living costs are yours to fund for the whole study period.

    The settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis): 5 years on a residence permit, 60 months of pension contributions, German at B1, basic knowledge of the legal and social order (the integration course test), and a secure income.

Time away
Five years of lawful, habitual residence. Trips abroad of up to 6 months do not break it; a residence permit lapses if you stay away longer than 6 months without permission. You cannot apply while holding a study permit.

Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.
  • Study years count at half toward settlement; once a German graduate holds a skilled job, settlement comes after 2 years (21 months on an EU Blue Card with B1 German), so about 3 years from this permit. For citizenship, study years can count as residence, but you cannot apply while still on a study permit.
  • The 3-year fast track for exceptionally well-integrated people was abolished by the Bundestag on 8 October 2025 (in force 30 October 2025); the BAMF page still mentions it, but the law now says 5 years.
  • Germany publishes no national decision time for naturalisation; it varies widely by city.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
