    First residence permit

    2 years, renewable for 2 years at a time.

  2. 2029
    Permanent residence

    Twenty-one months in a row as a temporary resident, applying before the temporary visa expires. For that continuity you may not be out of Ecuador for more than 90 days in total over the life of the temporary visa. Permanent residence can be cancelled after the first 2 years if you are away for 2 years in a row.

Language
Must speak and write Spanish. Graduates of a Spanish-taught Ecuadorian university degree or postgraduate course are exempt; people over 65 still need Spanish.
Civics
An online exam on Ecuador's history, geography, culture and current affairs, taken in Spanish; pass mark 90%, three attempts a month apart, then a one-year wait. Over-65s, minors and Ecuadorian university graduates are exempt. There is also an interview on why you want to be Ecuadorian.
Time away
Three years of regular, continuous residence holding the permanent-residence visa, counted from its issue. In those three years you may be out of Ecuador up to 180 days a year; more than that interrupts the residence and you cannot apply.
Two passports
Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.
  • Twenty-one months with no more than 90 days abroad in total leads to permanent residence; the 3-year citizenship clock only starts then.
  • Dual citizenship: the Human Mobility Law asks for no renunciation, but I did not read an explicit constitutional clause for foreigners; marked true on that basis.
  • The Reglamento read is the 2022 version (Decreto 354); gob.ec lists a 2023 version of the law and regulation, not compared line by line.
  • No official decision time for ordinary naturalisation (the law caps marriage-based cases at 90 days).
  • The program file says the nomad visa allows one renewal; the law makes temporary residence renewable 'on multiple occasions' and the regulation's nomad article sets no cap, so no cap is shown.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
