Digital nomad visa (Type D)

A Type D visa valid up to 365 days; it does not extend in-country. Estonia requires leaving the Schengen area for 90 days before a fresh application.

The hard part
The income floor is unusually high for the region, and every renewal starts from zero after a mandatory 90 days outside Schengen.

An exam on the Estonian Constitution and the Citizenship Act.
Time away
Eight years on residence permits, the last five of them living in Estonia permanently, with a long-term resident permit when you apply. The law is reported to count 'permanently' as at least 183 days a year in Estonia.
Two passports
Usually not: new citizens are asked to give up their other citizenship.
  • Time on this program does not count toward permanent residence or citizenship; the family would need to switch to one that does.
  • This is a visa, not a residence permit; Estonian long-term residence needs 5 years on a temporary residence permit.
  • The 183-days-a-year meaning of 'permanently' comes from older translations of the Citizenship Act; the current text on Riigi Teataja would not render to confirm it.
  • The Police and Border Guard Board forwards an application to the government within six months; the government's own decision time was not found.

Time you must spend there
This is a Type D national visa for Estonia, not a residence permit, so there is no minimum-days rule to keep it; once you leave Estonia for the rest of the Schengen area, the ordinary 90-days-in-180 visa-free rule applies to that further travel.
Tax
Staying more than 183 days in a year makes you an Estonian tax resident on worldwide income; most one-year nomad stays avoid this if timed carefully.
