What it takes.

Income
At least $4,600 a month, steady and documented.
Time
3–6 months to a decision once the file (income proof, insurance, Garda vetting) is complete.
Cost
About $500–1,000: no separate visa fee for the permission itself beyond registration (about €300 per year), plus private health cover and document costs.
The hard part
Proving the income is stable and accessible, not speculative; investment-fund income and unrealised gains are generally not accepted.

Five years of reckonable residence in the last nine, with the final year unbroken: no more than 70 days outside Ireland in the 12 months before applying (up to 30 more for exceptional reasons). Any gap in your permission, even a short one between renewals, does not count.

  • Stamp 0 counts as reckonable residence for citizenship, but it never becomes Stamp 4 or any other permanent status, so the family stays on yearly renewals until they naturalise.
  • Ireland publishes no official decision time for naturalisation; private advisers report about 8 months to a decision and 12–20 months to the certificate.
  • Ireland has no language or civics test for naturalisation today; none appears in the official guide.
  • The length of each Stamp 0 renewal is not published; it is usually granted a year at a time.

Becoming Irish tax resident depends on days present (183+ in a year, or 280 over two years); Ireland has no special low-tax regime for Stamp 0 holders, so worldwide income can become taxable if tax-resident.
