Ordinary (EB) visa extension

The ability to remain in Cambodia long-term with repeated extensions; the 6- and 12-month versions allow multiple entries. Does not itself grant work rights unless paired with a proper work permit.

Who qualifies

  • Enter on a 30-day Ordinary (E-class) visa, then extend it in-country in 1, 3, 6, or 12-month increments, renewable year after year with no formal cap on renewals.

  • Anyone working in Cambodia on an Ordinary visa is generally expected to hold a valid work permit and employment card from early on in their stay — reports of exactly when this is enforced vary, so budget for needing one from the first long extension rather than assuming a grace period.

What it takes.

Time
Extensions are typically processed within about 3–15 business days at the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh or through a licensed visa agent.
Cost
Modest: roughly $45 (1 month) to $155 (6 months) to $275–300 (12 months, multiple entry) per extension depending on duration and whether an agent is used.
The hard part
Making sure a genuine work permit and employment card are in place if you intend to work, and the fact that extensions are handled in person with no reliable public online portal.

  • Time on this program does not count toward permanent residence or citizenship; the family would need to switch to one that does.
  • Repeated visa extensions, not the immigration-law residence card that starts the seven-year naturalisation clock.
  • The immigration-law residence card that starts the clock could not be confirmed from an official page, so `permanent` is null; the ordinary visa extension (KH-EB) is not that card.
  • The 1996 law contains no requirement to give up another citizenship; since 2025 dual citizens are reported to have to register foreign passports, not confirmed officially.
  • A December 2025 sub-decree (No. 225) set new procedures; I read only a law-firm summary, which speaks of 'stable residence' without restating the years.
  • No decision time found for ordinary naturalisation.
