Premium Visa

A renewable long-stay visa, typically issued for up to a year at a time, with no local work rights beyond the remote job itself.

Who qualifies

You keep your U.S. citizenship.

1

Does it fit your family?

2 questions, from the program’s own rules.

Steady monthly income, from any source?

Not legal advice.

2

What it takes.

Income
At least $1,500 a month, steady and documented.
Time
About 2–4 weeks online through the EDB.
Cost
The visa itself is free to apply for online; the real cost is proving the $1,500/month income and holding qualifying medical insurance.
The hard part
Showing a genuine remote-work contract with a company based outside Mauritius, since local work is not permitted.

Dollar figures are converted from the local currency at the rate the program’s research used; the official figure is in the local currency.

Citizens by 2034.

If your first permit is issued in 2027 and you keep living there, this is the road.

  1. 2027
    First residence permit

1 year, renewable for 1 year at a time.

  2. 2028
    Renew the permit

Filed before the old one lapses; renews for 1 year.

  3. 2029
    Renew the permit

Filed before the old one lapses; renews for 1 year.

  4. 2030

Five years on an Occupation Permit or a retired Residence Permit, then a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit. Investors must show turnover (MUR 15 million a year or 75 million over five years); retirees must have brought in USD 200,000 over the five years.

  7. 2033
    Apply for citizenship

    With a language test.

  8. 2034
    Citizenship
Language
English or any other language in current use in Mauritius (French and Creole included); no formal test found.
Time away
The whole 12 months right before applying, plus at least 5 years in total during the 7 years before that. Holders of the spouse's temporary residence permit are excluded.
Two passports
It depends on the rules at the time and on your home country.
  • A one-year visa, renewable, with no route to permanent residence of its own; the citizenship test is about residence, so the years may count, but no official source says so.
  • The five-year permanent-residence rule is in the Finance Act 2025, but its Immigration Act part starts 'on a date to be fixed by Proclamation', which I could not confirm. The Passport and Immigration Office's own guidelines still show the old three-year rule.
  • Dual citizenship: the 2022 amendment removed the duty to renounce, but the minister may still strip a naturalised citizen who uses rights reserved to another country's nationals; how that is applied is not published.
  • The Commonwealth and spouse shorter clocks are registration routes; they are shown without nationality lists so they are not applied automatically.
  • Decision time is reported at about 12 months, but only in a search summary, so none is shown.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
  • Whether you can keep your current citizenship depends on the rules at the time and your home country.

Living there.

Time you must spend there
The visa is time-limited (up to a year) rather than tied to a minimum days-per-year requirement.
Tax
Staying more than 183 days a year can make you Mauritian tax resident, though Mauritius does not tax foreign income that is not remitted, and has no capital gains tax.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
