What it takes.

Age
65 or older.
Time
A few weeks once documents (retirement letter, bank statements, security clearance, medical insurance) are assembled.
Cost
Modest government visa fees, typically a few hundred dollars, plus medical insurance and a security-clearance letter.
The hard part
Getting a security clearance certificate from the home country and proof of imported retirement funds in the exact form Nigerian Immigration wants.

Citizens by 2043.

If your first permit is issued in 2027 and you keep living there, this is the road.

  1. 2027
    First residence permit

2 years, renewable for 2 years at a time.

  2. 2042
    Apply for citizenship
  3. 2043
    Citizenship
Time away
Either 15 years of continuous residence, or the whole 12 months right before applying plus 15 years in total during the 20 years before that. The State Governor must also confirm the local community accepts the applicant.
Two passports
It depends on the rules at the time and on your home country.
  • For retirees 65 and over: a two-year stay, no local work. The Constitution counts residence of any kind toward the 15-year clock, so the years should count, but renewal terms and practice are not confirmed.
  • Nigeria has no permanent residence earned by years; permanent-residence visas are by category, and the N5B retirement visa is one of them.
  • Dual citizenship: a naturalised Nigerian may keep a citizenship held by birth; any other must be given up within five months.
  • No official decision-time figure found; grants are by the President and discretionary.
  • How long the decision takes isn’t published; we allow a year.
  • Whether you can keep your current citizenship depends on the rules at the time and your home country.

Living there.

Time you must spend there
The program sets no minimum number of days. Renewal still expects it to be your home.
Tax
Nigeria taxes residents (broadly 183+ days) on worldwide income; a foreign pension's treatment depends on any tax treaty with the home country.

We never file a tax return. We tell you what applies and brief the professional who does.
