Digital nomad long-stay visa

A 90-day visa on entry, extendable to 12 months in-country, and renewable for a further 12 months if conditions still hold.

Who qualifies

Be employed by a company registered outside Romania, or own and manage a foreign-registered company, doing all work remotely.

What it takes.

Income: At least $6,250 a month, steady and documented.
Time: 2–4 weeks for the initial visa; a further few weeks for the in-country extension.
Cost: About $150–300 in visa and extension fees.
The hard part: Renewing past the first year depends on continuing to clear the income bar with fresh documentation each time, and the floor has risen sharply as Romanian wages have climbed.

Two passports: Yes. You keep your U.S. citizenship.

Whether nomad years count toward Romania's 5 years for long-term residence is not confirmed: the rules we could read neither list it as counting nor exclude it.
Law-firm summaries say the 2025 law caps the decision at 2 years, extendable by 6 months; we did not read that article in the official text.
Whether a B1 certificate is now required for this route was not confirmed; one law firm says B1 applies only to the ancestry routes.
RO-DNV: a 90-day visa, then a residence permit of up to 12 months renewable by 12, per the earlier research (2026-09-24); the IGI's nomad page no longer loads, so not re-read today.
