What it takes.

Income
At least $3,630 a month, steady and documented.
Time
30–60 days once filed at a Slovenian consulate or, if already in Slovenia visa-free, at an administrative unit.
Cost
About $55–185: roughly €50 in domestic administrative fees, or up to €167.50 (fee plus stamps) when applying from abroad, plus insurance.
The hard part
The mandatory 6-month gap between permits makes it a one-year-at-a-time arrangement, not a long-term base.

Time away
Ten years of actual residence in Slovenia, the last five without a break, with a settled residence status when you apply.
Two passports
Usually not: new citizens are asked to give up their other citizenship.
  • The years count, but this permit ends after 1 year, before permanent residence at 5; the family would need to move to another permit to keep going.
  • The nomad permit cannot be extended and a new one needs a 6-month gap, which breaks the 5 unbroken years; it only helps if the family switches to another temporary permit before it ends, which the law allows.
  • Whether 'settled status' means a permanent residence permit specifically was not confirmed.
  • How long an absence breaks the five unbroken years for citizenship, and the processing time, were not found.

No day-count applies during the single 1-year permit, since it cannot be renewed or extended; leaving Slovenia does not matter, but the family must stay outside the country for 6 months after it expires before reapplying.

Slovenian tax residence follows the 183-day rule.
