Residence and work on Svalbard under its open-access system, subject to means and local rules; it does not grant mainland Norway immigration status.

Who qualifies

  • Svalbard is outside Norway's ordinary Immigration Act and Schengen; the Governor says foreigners need no Svalbard visa, work permit or residence permit.

  • A person must have means to reside on Svalbard and may be rejected if unable to support themselves; the Governor advises arranging work and housing before arrival.

  • Travel via mainland Norway crosses the Schengen external border. A U.S. traveller must separately satisfy the applicable Schengen entry rules; Svalbard residence does not create a mainland Norwegian residence right.
