Can you claim Ukrainian citizenship through a parent?
Territorial origin (Art. 8)
If your parent, grandparent or great-grandparent was born or lived permanently in what is now Ukraine before 1991, you may acquire citizenship by territorial origin. Since 16 January 2026 Ukraine permits multiple citizenship with countries on the Cabinet's approved list; whether your home country is on it decides whether you keep your other citizenship.
What would settle itThe archival record of the ancestor's birth or residence in Ukrainian territory, and whether your home country is on the Cabinet's approved list.
- A person whose parent, grandparent or great-grandparent was born or permanently resided before 24 August 1991 in the territory that became Ukraine (or in the Ukrainian People's Republic, the West Ukrainian People's Republic, the Ukrainian SSR and the other listed states), and that person's children, have a right to citizenship by territorial origin. - Territorial origin requires recognising the Constitution and laws, and passing examinations in the basics of the Constitution, the history of Ukraine, and the state language at the level set by the National Commission on State Language Standards.
